I live in the Capital District region of Upstate NY. Our larger cities include Albany, the state capitol, Schenectady and Troy. Smaller cities include Watervliet and Cohoes, where I was born and raised. In the mid seventies, I went off to college and came back to the area, settling in tthe suburbs. When we moved my parents back to Cohoes in 1997, I wandered around the old city and became fascinated with the decay and the history of the place. Old textile mills, imposing, decrepit structures, wasting away, unused. My closed high school, my elementary school torn town. the stores all closed. See this work via the Cohoes NY link above. This was the beginning of my love for the gritty documentary style of image making that has interested me since. I started with Cohoes and have moved on to a larger project looking at the cities of my area, and studying their demise. This year, I have been emphasizing the look of the old brick in our remaining historical buildings...before they all fall down or are torn down. Visit the six portfolios in the menu above. The images were taken between 1997 and 2009. The Historical page includes a selection of old postcards and images that show the area of yesteryear. I won't apologize for the look and feel of these pages. Maybe people will get mad and do something! I'd appreciate hearing your comments, critiques and questions.
