In winter 1998, needing a topic for a Graduate School special project, I contacted my cousin, who lived near Greenwich NY, and he introduced me to Brian LeBarron, who, at that time, was operating his family dairy farm near Argyle, NY. Brian and his mother agreed to let me come up and photograph over six weekends as winter turned to spring. I would get up there most Saturdays and/or Sundays in time for 6AM milking and stay through dusk. I followed them through all their daily chores and wandered the farm, photographing everything that caught my eye. I found out that dairy farming is one tough son of a @#*! job. They were, at that time, getting only slightly more for their milk than it cost them to produce it. The prices fluctuated regularly and they were at the mercy of the milk processors and demand. They have since given up farming and have gone on to other, hopefully, less perilous pursuits. Thanks to Brian, his mother Barbara who owned the land and did much of the milking, and also their hired hand, Craig, for letting me document their every act. They got nothing out of it, and I got this body or work. All Photo Galleries can be run as slide shows. Controls at the bottom of each gallery. |
