The Adirondacks of Upstate New York is a six million acre mix of Wilderness, Wildlands, Rural Farms and Small Towns, the most famous of which are Lake George and Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. see images of the Wilderness and Wildland areas in my page 'Adirondacks Untamed'. In 1999, while in Graduate School, I decided to do my MFA Photographic Thesis on the towns and people of the Adirondacks that I had previously completely ignored in my visits of the Wilderness areas. Over the course of seven years and more, I visited small towns and rural communities and photographed the residents and the various fascinating details of their lives. I met loggers, farmers, sawmill iperators and a number of great people. I completed a book from the numerous interviews and thousands of images that remains, unfortunately, unpublished. Maybe someday when I get the money. In the meantime, here is a modest selection of the images I made. All images were made with my Nikon FE2 cameras and 24/2.8 and 105/2.5 Nikkor lenses on Kodak Tri-X film. Visit the six portfolios in the menu above. The images were all taken between 1999 and about 2006. A number of the people pictured have since passed. All images of people were made with their permission. I'd enjoy hearing your comments, critiques and questions. All Photo Galleries can be run as slide shows. Controls at the bottom of each gallery. |
